So...the other day I was hired on the spot at a local "upscale" bakery. I went in to work yesterday (my first day) and was FIRED...because I smoke..the stupid bitch was way over paranoid about the cookies, and cupcakes tasting like smoke and the shop smelling like smoke..this bitch is dumb, the ONLY way shit can smell and taste like smoke is if you smoke in the establishment. Needless to say I have filed a complaint with Labor Standards, as it's a case of discrimination. NEVER in my life have a ever been fired, especially for smoking. It's not like I blazed a fat blunt before walking through the door...End of rant, sorry guys

my advice...you gotta understand that even in places like California were the bud is kind of legal and somewhat acceptable, not everyone is feeling it....and you gotta do what you got do to keep that shit to yourself......call it "putting on the professional hat"

It really does suck Jbo, but it is illegal to discriminate, an employer is not allowed to ask you your age, race, sexuality or whether your a smoker or not. I used to smoke WAY more than I do now, a year ago I smoked a pack a day easily, now I smoke a pack or two a week, so I am on my way to quitting. Any and all employers should educate themselves on discrimination laws, clearly this Asian lady has NO idea. I've filed a complaint and my husband is having the company lawyer write her a very terse letter. Now  if I had $10,000 I could rightfully sue her and win, but she would just likely go bankrupt, I was "perfect" for the job, gave all the "right" answers to her questions and then got "dismissed". She had the audacity to complain that she then had double the amount of work to do yesterday because she was relying on me to be there. She works a 100hrs a week because she finds faults in everyone. The only employees that she will ever have will be family and youth. She's made her bed and now she has to lay in it. It sucks to be her to say the least.

I hear ya Chuckee, let's see what the terse letter from the lawyer and complaint filed with Labor Standards/Relations does to her, perhaps she will educate herself on them. Should she call again, which is likely not to happen, I will politely tell her to shove her job and her bakery up her asshole so far she can no longer find it.

And she didn't know I smoked during the interview but because I had a smoke 15-20mins before going in she basically freaked and then says "I don't mean to discriminate"..smh she's dumb

I'm gonna say that 70-80% of bakers or kitchen staff smoke, she is a finicky Asian lady that likely would have broken other labor laws later on. I'm no longer pissed because I was dismissed, I'm more appalled at the fact she has NO conception of Discrimination Laws here in Canada, Now if the situation was reversed and I told her that I didn't need her because "she's of Asian decent" she'd sue my ass off. 

In any job I've ever had in my 15 years of working, I've never smoked while at work, I saved it for after hours. Her worry was that the "smell" from my clothes, jacket, purse, would make her store and products reek/taste like smoke, when in reality, the only way that would happen is if one smoked in the store.

And that is exactly the way that I am looking at it. I know that there will be somewhere else that appreciates and recognizes my skills in the culinary field. So when I become a well renowned and respected baker, I'll open a shop right next door from her and laugh in her face :-)
